3 Tips for Ensuring Your Handbag and Leather Goods Always Shine

When was the last time you gave your beloved bag or leather goods a thorough clean? If you're anything like me, it's usually when your bag is overflowing, and you find yourself desperately searching for your keys! That's my cue to dive in and give it a good clean. Plus, it's usually around the time when the leather could use a revitalising polish too.

Keeping your bag clean doesn't have to be a time-consuming task; in fact, it should only take about 5 to 10 minutes. Which begs the question: why don't we do this more often?

Allow me to share three helpful tips to ensure your bag looks its best:

Tip 1: Let's Start from the Inside!

First things first, empty your bag completely. You might be amazed at what you discover hiding in there! Then, armed with the long nose attachment on your vacuum cleaner, delve into all the nooks and crannies, clean out the internal main compartment, and tackle every pocket. Using a vacuum ensures you remove any dust, dirt, or even those stray crumbs (I remember finding snacks from my kids' younger days in my bag!).

Tip 2: Don't Neglect the Hardware!

This is a step many of us forget, but it can truly make a difference, especially if your bag boasts shiny gold, silver, or rose gold hardware. Grab a soft, clean cotton or microfiber cloth and give your hardware a good polish. Personally, I find microfiber cloths work wonders here. Remember, avoid using any products on the hardware to prevent surface damage. A simple, dry cloth is all you need.

Tip 3: The Final Touch for Luxurious Leather!

This step might take a bit more time, but trust me, it's worth it. Let's focus on the leather itself. Start by giving your bag a quick polish using a soft, clean cotton cloth. Sometimes, a gentle hand polish is all it needs, especially if the leather already contains natural oils and waxes. Use circular motions and the cloth to redistribute the oils and minimize any scratches.

If your bag requires extra care, you can use a quality leather conditioner or balm. However, take note of the following:

  • Choose a quality conditioning product that is suitable for your specific leather type.
  • Prior to application, carefully read the label to ensure it meets your requirements and matches your leather.
  • Always perform a test patch first. Find an inconspicuous spot on the bag, such as the base or inside, and test a small area. Leave it for a couple of days or as instructed on the label before proceeding to apply the product to the entire item.

If your bag has marks that are not scratches but rather require cleaning, it's recommended to find a reliable leather cleaner that matches your bag's leather type. Clean the bag thoroughly before using any polish or balm. As always, closely follow the instructions on the label and perform a test patch beforehand. Remember, it's crucial to test any products on your leather goods before full application.

There you have it – simple yet effective tips to restore your leather goods to their former glory. You'll be amazed at the transformation!

Happy polishing!
